John Glenn Athletes have had a history of impressive individual athletic performances. From Agron Vasha being the first ever state champion at JG in the sport of wrestling; to Sylvia Roberts and Joanne Pachiva, the state champion tennis duo; to Kelly Graham winning the 100 & 200 meter hurdles in consecutive years; to Matt Martin winning the 100m butterfly in swimming, and several other great individual athletes in between. The most recent state championship performances have come from Jaron Flournoy, in the 100 & 200m events in 2015 and now Mike Mars’ historic performance over the previous 4 years. Mike Mars has just completed arguably, the most successful athletic career in school history.
Mike Mars has become a 3X MHSAA Wrestling Division 1 State Champion and a 4X finalist. Compiling an interscholastic record of 218 wins and only 8 losses. Mike won his first state title as a freshman and then again as a sophomore, before losing in the state finals his junior year. This loss served as a motivator for Mike and he came back his senior year with a mission – to become an undefeated state champion and break records along the way. During his senior season, Mike finished the season with a 55-0 record and 40 of those wins coming via pin fall. This dominate performance caps off a dominating career, both on the wrestling mat and in the classroom; where he has earned Academic All State Honors.
